Story Time: The Little Matchgirl

Posted on 04:00 by Unknown

Ready to partake in Blessing Manifesting's Plan A: Christmas Spirit? Grab a cup of egg nog, hot cocoa, tea or coffee, put on Christmas music, sit back, and enjoy The Little Matchgirl by Hans Christian Andersen!

Once upon a time . . . a little girl tried to make a living by selling matches in the street.

It was New Year’s Eve and the snowclad streets were deserted. From brightly lit windows came the tinkle of laughter and the sound of singing. People were getting ready to bring in the New Year. But the poor little matchseller sat sadly beside the fountain. Her ragged dress and worn shawl did not keep out the cold and she tried to keep her bare feet from touching the frozen ground. She hadn't sold one box of matches all day and she was frightened to go home, for her father would certainly be angry. It wouldn't be much warmer anyway, in the draughty attic that was her home. The little girl’s fingers were stiff with cold. If only she could light a match! But what would her father say at such a waste! Falteringly she took out a match and lit it. What a nice warm flame! The little matchseller cupped her hand over it, and as she did so, she magically saw in its light a big brightly burning stove. She held out her hands to the heat, but just then the match went out and the vision faded. The night seemed blacker than
before and it was getting colder. A shiver ran through the little girl’s thin body.

After hesitating for a long time, she struck another match on the wall, and this time, the glimmer turned the wall into a great sheet of crystal. Beyond that stood a fine table laden with food and lit by a candlestick. Holding out her arms towards the plates, the little matchseller seemed to pass through the glass, but then the match went out and the magic faded. Poor thing: in just a few seconds she had caught a glimpse of everything that life had denied her: warmth and good things to eat. Her eyes filled with tears and she lifted her gaze to the lit windows, praying that she too might know a little of such happiness.

She lit the third match and an even more wonderful thing happened. There stood a Christmas tree hung with hundreds of candles, glittering with tinsel and coloured balls. “Oh, how lovely!” exclaimed the little matchseller, holding up the match. Then, the match burned her finger and flickered out. The light from the Christmas candles rose higher and higher, then one of the lights fell, leaving a trail behind it. “Someone is dying,” murmured the little girl, as she remembered her beloved Granny who used to say: “When a star falls, a heart stops beating!”

Scarcely aware of what she was doing, the little matchseller lit another match. This time, she saw her grandmother.

“Granny, stay with me!” she pleaded, as she lit one match after the other, so that her grandmother could not disappear like all the other visions. However, Granny did not vanish, but gazed smilingly at her. Then she opened her arms and the little girl hugged her crying: “Granny, take me away with you!”

A cold day dawned and a pale sun shone on the fountain and the icy road. Close by lay the lifeless body of a little girl surrounded by spent matches. ” Poor little thing!” exclaimed the passersby. “She was trying to keep warm!”

But by that time, the little matchseller was far away where there is neither cold, hunger nor pain.

Plan A: Get Into the Christmas Spirit

Posted on 00:40 by Unknown
Today is Wishcasting Wednesday and today's wish goes absolutely wonderfully with a plan I've been hatching since this morning. You see, I hate Christmas. I don't really hate it, but it's not a happy time for me. If you had asked me yesterday, what I'm excited about for this month, I would have said the Hobbit, with nary a thought for Christmas.

Working at my retail job makes the holidays about hectic work schedules and increasing sales. Being estranged from my family also means it's sometimes a bit lonely and sad ((but not stressful, which I am eternally grateful for)). So Christmas hasn't been fun for me in a while. Today, Jamie Ridler asks us:

What do you wish to celebrate?

I wish to celebrate the holiday season. I have a pagan heart and consider it Yule, but I'm all about honoring the spirit of the holiday, despite what name you call it, let's celebrate it all! For me,this is a time of gratitude, merriment, gift-giving, and celebration. I wish to celebrate and honor that this season! (I might even bake Christmas cookies, we shall see!)

Oh, but how to get into the holiday season? That's when plan Blessing Manifesting: Get Into the Christmas Spirit comes into play. I want to celebrate the holiday spirit and I want you to join me! Every day, for the rest of the month, I will be posting a holiday related quote on the Blessing Manifesting Facebook page at 9pm EST so "like me" and then share the updates with your friends and family. Spread the cheer! And also, for the next six days?

Christmas Story TIME!!!

I'm going to be posting some of my favorite (and new to me!) Christmas stories to imbue us with the holiday spirit. Egg nog and Christmas music are optional. So I hope you'll stop by for the next six days and share in the stories, and good company!

Your Body is a Temple

Posted on 04:00 by Unknown
I know that it's so cliche to talk about your body being a temple but it is a temple. It is sacred. I almost titled this "Your Body is a Wonderland" but no one needs John Mayer stuck in their head this early in the morning. Sorry!

tem·ple /ˈtempəl/

Noun: A building devoted to the worship, or regarded as the dwelling place, of a god or gods or other objects of religious reverence.

Holy dinger isn't that perfect? Your body is the dwelling place for your soul, and if your soul isn't a piece of God, the Universe, Mama Earth, Great Spirit, or stardust, then I don't know what is.

We are all sacred.

You would never tag a church, sacred grove, or holy place with ugly and hateful words, so why is it okay to call your body fat or disgusting?

I love the idea or imprinting onto our psyche that we are incredibly sacred beings, that we are no different from a holy place. When you think about your body and what it does for you on a daily basis you should be filled with awe, happiness, and gratitude.

Make the commitment to speak lovingly of your temple. To treat it well, take care of it, and give it what it needs to flourish. Be proud of everything that your body does and everything that your body is. Recognize how lovely you are. Protect your temple, stay away from people that disrespect you.

You are the only you that there is, and you are absolutely sacred.

Bonks you on da head: Your Story Matters

Posted on 04:00 by Unknown
This is something that I have said again, and again, your story matters. I'm not just saying it for you, but for me as well. I sometimes forget how powerful my truth is.

I think we all go through periods of self doubt, where we wonder if we are really making a difference by telling our stories. I feel that way at least once every few weeks, and then I rediscover why it is that I do what I do and why you should do it too.

Your story lets others know that they are not alone.

Your story can heal.

A few weeks ago someone came to me with a personal problem. Something that I went through myself. As they spoke, I realized that most people would pass judgement on what this person was going though but I found myself able to have a deep understanding of the issue and compassion for the person and how they were feeling. I was able to offer advice and an understanding ear, and I realized what a gift that was.

If I didn't tell my story then no one would know it.

There are some things about me that could be coined 'shameful' and yet I am open about them. I have talked about my affair with a married man, my verbally abusive past, my deep depression, my abandonment issues, my body image struggles, and my decision not to have children. All of those things are things that someone out there can relate to.

There have also been things that I haven't found the voice to talk about, my struggles with self-injury, my complicated relationship with my mother and step-father, my choice to be celibate, my coming-out as bisexual, all of these stories need to be told as well, but it's a difficult process to make peace with them enough for them to do good in the world.

The things that you are ashamed about, are the things that other people have been ashamed about, are still ashamed about, and might always be ashamed about. You, me, us, we give them a chance to see that something good can come out of those situations because we are the good that comes from those situations.

So just in case you needed a reminder.

Tell your story.

It matters.

Who I Want To Be

Posted on 03:00 by Unknown
I've been doing some thinking, as is my Autumn habit. It's a time for me to hunker down and figure stuff out. Look back on the year and figure out what I liked and what I didn't.

As the leaves change, I try to figure out what I want to change about myself.

I once had a friend tell me that if I really loved myself then I wouldn't feel the need to change. That thought tripped me up for a little bit. Was she right? Was all of my efforts at self improvement just a way to cover-up some secret self-loathing and not-good-enough feelings?

In the end I thought about it and I realized that I want to grow. I want to learn. I want to change. Transform. Evolve. It's like being a child. Children are wonderful as they are, but they can't stay that way forever. They've got to learn new things, new skills, new abilities. It's the same with me. There's always something to change, to do better at, but I'm still awesome right now.

Just because I want to change, doesn't mean I don't love myself now.

It took awhile for me to realize that change doesn't equal having to fix something. It's transformation. It's upgrading. I think I'm going to go around saying that "Self-improvement? I'm self-upgrading here. I'm just downloading a new app for anger-management." Let's totally start a movement with that.

The other day I was thinking about how I want to change and improve, what things I'm not entirely happy about, and I decided to write it down. (I have mentioned my worksheet addiction haven't I?)  So I made one! Who I Am Now vs Who I Want To Be maybe it will be useful for you too. I tried to keep it positive and honest. Like I said, there are a lot of things about me right now that I love. So I wrote them down, alongside the things I don't. It's all in your perspective!

That's where I'm at now, it feels like a good place, and I am so excited about what is to come, both from me and Blessing Manifesting.

Here's to hope, love, and all the good stuff!
